Life Often Takes Us by Surprise

Life often takes us by surprise, and it did when I decided to write a list of the skills and actions needed for interior design projects. Not only was the list longer than anticipated, it led me to realize that creating functional and beautiful spaces is not about “materialism” but actually a Torah commandment.

All I can say is “WOW”, “WOA”, and “Who knew?”!

As an interior designer, I handle full house renovations, kitchen design, bathroom remodeling, custom carpentry design, home styling, color consultation, furniture layout and purchasing, lighting, art placement, and so much more.

Part of “so much more” is the reality that proper home design improves lives, improves marriages, improves family life, improves overall health and happiness, and uplifts moods. WOW!

Along these lines, one client told me, “You are doing G-dly work.” WOA! That actually wasn’t hyperbole. We learn through the Torah that HaShem wants us to live in functional and beautiful spaces so that His presence can dwell amongst us.

It is not "materialistic" to want your living space to provide a place for everything and everything in its place and offer a cohesive feel, along with visual beauty. The Torah describes in great detail the building of the Mishkan/sanctuary in all its glory.

“And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. According to all that I show you, the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all its vessels, even so shall you make it.” (Shemot 25:8-9)

Our sages teach that today, our homes are a “Mishkan me’at”, a present-day sanctuary where HaShem may dwell amongst us.

“And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their G-d. And they shall know that I am the Lord their G-d, that brought them out of Egypt, that I may dwell among them; I am the Lord their G-d[1]” (Shemot 29:45-46)

Through maximizing the function and beauty of your home, life all around looks better, brighter, and more manageable. Peace can be achieved as HaShem is with you. Who knew?

Therefore, it is clear that interior design is not a “cute hobby."  It is a trained profession that helps G-d’s presence dwell in homes and involves a long list of skills and actions.

These include:

  • Creative visualization, design, and attention to detail

  • Computer program skills including 2D and 3D sketching

  • Color theory

  • Spatial perception

  • Space planning

  • Budget forecasting, identifying hidden charges, and financial record keeping

  • Scheduling, task prioritization, and time management

  • Contract negotiating

  • Organization

  • Customer service

  • Strong communication and social skills

  • Knowledge of building codes

  • Material specifications and procurement

  • Collaboration and teamwork

  • Conflict resolution, problem solving, shalom bayit navigation, and psychology

  • Mind reading client needs, wishes, and dreams

  • Stress tolerance

  • Strong active listening and empathy

  • Patience

  • Vendor knowledge and relations

Transforming homes and lives by improving function, flow, and beauty is my passion from which I am blessed to make my parnasa. I am happy to help make your home a place where HaShem dwells amongst you in peace, harmony, happiness, and serenity.
