There’s nothing quite like waking up in a space that feels fresh, calm, cohesive, and filled with light. This bedroom transformation—for returning clients whose living and dining rooms I had previously designed—was all about turning their eclectic blue, grey, and bright yellow space with an attached TV lounge into a contemporary and comforting retreat where they could relax, reset, and rest.
In my client’s words, she envisioned a space that would make her “smile and feel more uplifting.” She also hoped to reduce the amount of grey that had been incorporated in earlier years. While they wanted to keep most of their existing furniture, the couple agreed it was time to replace their lounge chairs, which the husband found uncomfortable due to their unpadded arms.

The transformation began with addressing a long-standing architectural issue: the wall in the TV viewing area was not aligned. For reasons unknown, the original builder had left this wall incomplete. Finishing it and adding matching molding immediately created a more unified and intentional feeling throughout the room.
We chose Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace to paint the entire space—a bright, crisp white that instantly lifted the mood. While it’s more costly than brands like Tambour or Nirlat and requires a skilled professional for proper prep and application, the final result is unmatched. Its smooth finish, durability, and easy maintenance make it well worth the investment.

The grey shag carpet was replaced with warm herringbone parquet, instantly elevating the room’s texture and warmth.
Some existing art pieces were removed, while those that remained were reframed and repositioned for better proportion and visual impact. The first thing you now notice when entering the bedroom is a stunning, large-scale beach scene above the headboard by the talented Nitzan Fux. Known for her unique technique of printing and hand-embellishing her pieces with paint, Nitzan’s work feels textured and bespoke. Though more affordable than a full original, the added paint makes the piece feel one-of-a-kind. To harmonize with the retained grey headboard and nightstands, I asked Nitzan to incorporate subtle grey tones into the artwork.

Lighting also received a thoughtful update. We swapped out the old sconces for contemporary brass ones, then echoed that detail throughout the room by replacing closet and drawer handles with sleek brass pulls. Even the grey nightstands—previously handle-free—got an upgrade with brass knobs, bringing in a touch of glamour and cohesion.
Coastal doesn’t have to mean cliché. We avoided the expected seashells and starfish and instead chose natural textures and tonal harmony. To complete the lounge area, we hung a set of brass birds with three-dimensional detailing that perfectly align with the breezy beach-inspired mood and serene atmosphere.
Finally, we replaced the short grey curtains with elegant, floor-length white panels that let in ample daylight while keeping the space soft and tranquil.
This bedroom went from draining and disjointed to light, fresh, and full of life. With my clients’ goal in mind and a clear design vision, this stunning bedroom and lounge area now checks all their boxes. It’s a place where they start and end each day feeling relaxed, elevated, and yes — smiling. The result: serenity and joy.
